“I just want the real Helena Bertinelli back" aka: “I think Black people aren’t real people and that women can’t be both Black and Italian”

Cry harder into your moldering piles of back issues, racists 😀

It has nothing to do with her race, I have absolutely nothing against that. It has everything to do with the character herself, and the origin. It’s the same with Babs being Batgirl again. I like her way better as Oracle. Same with Dinah and a few other characters. Their character/personality and origin, were way better Pre New 52. If Hel B was a different race even before the New 52, I wouldn’t mind at all. Her race isn’t the issue. The issue is: she’s completely different than when she was before. The New 52, changed so many characters and origins, it’s okay to not like them, and only like Pre New 52.

Did I ask for your long-winded racist opinion??

No I fucking did not.

Please, stay in your lane and shut the entire hell up when you see a black woman talking about antiblack racism in fandom because guess what: I know way more about fandom’s antiblackness and how it was directed at Helena Bertinelli in Grayson than you EVER will.

It was real and it was nasty and it was, 100%, racialized misogyny that hinged on racist fans hating the idea of DIck being with anyone that isn’t Barbara but who also hate the idea of legacy characters being introduced as Black characters (considering the shit the continue to sling at Wally)

Newsflash: Helena B basically has the SAME FUCKING BACKSTORY in the current universe (WHICH ISN’T THE NEW FIFTY TWO YA NUB – DCYou (which Grayson really was a part of) was a weird hybrid that paved the way for Rebirth) as she did in the original DC Universe.

Her personality? THE SAME.

Her motivations? THE SAME.

Her brief romantic interest in Dick Grayson? THE FUCKING SAME.

The actual ONLY differences are that she’s Black (but I’m waiting for the BOP team to retcon the hell out of that because I’ve heard some ish about their writing) and that instead of the writers hating her for her relationship with Dick Grayson, the fans do.

Miss me with this “it’s not about race” bullshit because clearly, you’ve never seen someone pleading for “that Black bitch in Grayson” to die because they hate the idea of Helena B being Black and attracted/attractive to Dick Grayson.

Bye!

One last bitter post though:

Dick Grayson gets protected against this imaginary spectre of male objectification. Fandom makes PSAs and “defense squads” and safe spaces to combat the harm supposedly done by this comic.

But then, Helena Bertinelli and Tiger both are subject to racist (and in Helena’s case, misogyny that’s racialized) comments and posts and being erased in fandom.

There are posts calling for the death of “that Matron bitch”, racist posts about both Tiger and Helena that demand their removal from canon in the rudest ways possible. They’re in the tags with fellow members of the wide DC fandom cosigning them via likes and reblogs.

But where are there defense squads? Why isn’t anyone trying to protect tho relatively prominent characters of color from fandom?

Oh wait. I know why.

It’s because fandom is a hypocritical fucking shit show that only cares about diversity and representation in this super shallow and performative way.

Unconventional Courtship 2016 is HERE!

Yes, it’s that fantastic time of the year when the Unconventional Courtship community opens up for new stories!  Unconventional Courtship is a panfandom fic fest where writers create and post a 1000+ word story that is based on a Mills & Boon or Harlequin plot.

And we’re participating – we being the modly types here at Graysonette and as many friends we can convince to join up – because we need more Grayson stories to exist in this world. Unconventional Courtship is a chance for writers to play with their favorite characters, putting them in situations that they normally might not get to experience in canon. We’re hopeful that fellow Grayson fans will get in on this and write fic for their favorite ships from the series!

You can read the event details at the link above (so go do it), but here are the important details as they relate to Grayson and this little blog:

  1. You don’t need to have a Dreamwidth account to participate, but making one is absolutely free.
  2. Posting begins on June 1 and goes through the end of the month. When you sign up, you can choose your day (or days if you plan to post more than one story).
  3. When they say Harlequin, you can use any summary from Harlequin’s main likes like Kiss, Nocturne, and the like. Jury’s still out on Carina titles as they’re technically not the standard Harlequin fare, but there’s no shame in asking in UC’s FAQ’s or contact post if there’s a Carina Press title you want to tweak for your story.

If you decide to particpate in Unconventional Courtship 2016 and decide to write about any ships involving the characters/ships/settings in the Grayson comic, let us know and we’ll rec the hell out of your story across the internet. And if you’re lucky (and don’t mind mediocre photoshop), there might even be a fake Harlequin cover in it for you!

All ships and genrea are welcome for the event so get creative, fellow Graysonettes and let’s do this thing!
